Alternating Current (AC) - A flow of electricity which reaches maximum in one direction, decreases to zero, then reverses itself and reaches maximum in the opposite direction. The cycle is repeated continuously. The number of cycles per second is equal to the frequency. Back-up Current Limiting Fuse - A current-limiting fuse capable of interrupting all currents from its rated maximum interrupting current down to its rated minimum interrupting current as specified by the manufacturer; defined by ANSI C37.40-1981 or latest issue. Current - The movement of electrons through a conductor, measured in amperes. Current Interrupter - Any device that will open a circuit after sensing an abnormal high-circuit condition; a general name given to all types of fuses, reclosers and breakers. Current Limiting Fuse - Back-up - A current-limiting fuse capable of interrupting all currents from its rated maximum interrupting current down to its rated minimum interrupting current as specified by the manufacturer.
Full Range - A current-limiting fuse capable of interrupting all currents from the maximum rated interrupting current down to the minimum continuous current that causes melting or the fusible element(s), when the fuse is applied at maximum ambient temperature specified by the fuse manufacturer.
General Purpose - A current-limiting fuse capable of interrupting all currents from its rated maximum interrupting current down to that current which causes melting or the fusible element in one hour.
Current-Permit - Written permission from the inspection department to a supply authority to the effect that electric energy may be supplied to a particular installation. Direct Current (DC) - An essentially constant value current that flows in only on direction. Discharge Current - The surge current that flows through an arrester. Eddy Current Loss - The current that is generated in the core due to the voltage that is induced in each lamination by the alternating magnetic flux. The eddy current is proportional to the square of the thickness of the lamination and to the square of the frequency. Fault Current - The current from the connected power system that flows in a short circuit. Follow Current - The current which flows through an arrester, caused by the power frequency voltage across it, during and after the passage of surge current. Current Sensing Fuse - An expulsion fuse having elements whose characteristics are not affected by elevated oil temperatures; a fuse having elements that are made of copper, tin or silver that will react to current flow only.
Fuse Maximum Interrupting Current - That upper current level that a fuse can successfully clear with assured reliability; the maximum current at a specified maximum design voltage that a fuse if required to clear as specified by the manufacturer.
Fuse Minimum Interrupting Current - That lower limit of current that upon melting a fuse can be assured of successfully clearing; a term generally associated with back-up current-limiting fuses indication the lower limit of current that the fuse can clear upon melting.
Half Cycle of Current - A half loop of current having a duration of 0.00833 seconds. Half Loop of Current - The amount of time it takes the current to go from one zero reference to another. Inrush Current - The initial momentary surge current demand before a load resistance of impedance increases to its normal operating value. Maximum Time Current Curve - A curve plotted on log-log paper that describes the time to complete interruption at a particular current for a specific device; a complete set of points (curve) containing the absolute maximum time to circuit interruption at a specific current for a particular device. Minimum Melt Time Current Curve - A curve plotted on log-log paper that describes the time to complete melting for a specific interrupter; a complete set of points (curve) containing the absolute minimum time to melt at a specific current for a particular device. Locked Rotor Current Rating - A current rating marked on electric equipment or, where not marked, is deemed to be equal to six times the full load current rating from the nameplate of the equipment.
Rated Load Current - (for a hermetic refrigerant motor-compressor) - a value marked on a hermetic motorcompressor intended for use where applicable to ascertain wiring, protection, and control for the unit.
Overcurrent Device - Any device capable of automatically opening an electric circuit, under both predetermined overload and short-circuit conditions, either by fusing of metal or by electro-mechanical means. Peak Line Current - Maximum instantaneous current during a cycle. Leakage Current Collector - A device designed to provide a path to ground for leakage current originating from devices in contact with pool water.
Power Follow Current - refer to Follow Current. Reference Current (Iref) - The reference current is the peak value of the resistive component of a power frequency current high enough to make the effects of stray capacitance of the equipment negligible. This current level shall be specified by the manufacturer. RMS Line Current - The square root of the average of the squares of all the instantaneous current amplitudes occurring during one cycle. TCC (Time Current Curve) - TCCs are a series of points plotted in a curve on log paper describing the current-time reacting characteristics of a current interrupting device. TCCs are a tool used by engineers to determine coordination and correlation of devices. Time Current Curves (TCC) - A series of points plotted in a curve on log paper describing the current-time reacting characteristics of a current interrupting device; a tool used by engineers to determine coordination and correlation of devices. |
